This spring, all 11th grade juniors focused on understanding one of the most critical components of patient care - confidentiality. Through a training module developed by San Diego's Health and Science Pipeline Initiative (HASPI), the students learned about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and other state and federal laws/regulations aimed and protecting health information.
The module focused on facts and figures, but also on important real world situations as a means of instruction.
At the end of the training, which occurred during their Medical Science 11 class, students' skills were reviewed and each was asked to sign a confidentiality statement.
Our thanks to the staff of HASPI for developing and sharing this effective and important training module, and to HSA Work-Based Learning Coordinator Erin Stryffeler for leading the training.
