MEDICAL SCIENCE CLASS PUTS ON HEALTH CLINIC FOR LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AND GUESTS

With a goal of educating the community about common urban health issues, our 9th grade Medical Science students spent months conducting research and preparing dynamic lesson plans for the clinic.

Working in groups, student plans included an introduction, hook, and short lecture on the physiology, statistics, prevent and treatment of their assigned health issue.  They also prepared a brief demonstration involving audience members.

Areas of focus included heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, anaphylactic and hypovolemic shock, drugs and alcohol, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The two-day clinic was held on March 29th and 30th on the HSA campus.  Guests in attendance included students from Henry Clay Middle School, parents, community volunteers, and staff from Alliance College-Ready Public Schools.

"I so enjoyed visiting the HSA Health Clinic today," shared Marcee Seegan, Vice President of Schools for the Alliance.  "Wow, great to see our future health care providers so knowledgeable about so many important health concerns.  I was especially impressed by the students mini presentations.  They were all so confident, articulate, technically savvy and anxious to share their knowledge and demonstrate the use of several medical devices.  Nice job!"

Congratulations to all of the students and to Medical Science 9 teacher Ms. Kim on a job well done!
