Course Description
The focus in English 11 is an introduction to American literature. Obviously it would be impossible to cover all the masterpieces written since the birth of this nation; therefore, we will read selected works that represent the major themes, intellectual trends, and cultural values of the nation. We will analyze the major movements in American Literature and essential strategies for literary criticism. Students will also participate in oral discussions, debates, and presentations to develop communication skills. After completing this course, you should have a broader and deeper understanding of and appreciation for the profound beauty and universal truths of the human experience, as well as a more personal awareness of what it means to be an American.
Not only will students read a variety of work, but they will also produce a variety journals, essays, poems, and written responses. While completing the writing genres as listed in the Common Core State Standards, students will be given instruction in vocabulary development, grammar, usage, composition, and prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and a final draft. They will also be encouraged to participate in peer and adult revisions.
This course fulfills the U.C. and eleventh grade graduation requirement for English.

Your assignment is to write a multi-paragraph essay that defines your interpretation of what it means to be an American. This essay should use the strategies of definition and different perspectives from the unit to help you develop a complex and thoughtful definition. It does NOT need to be typed!
