Out-of-School Opportunities

Below are just a few of the exciting opportunities available to HSA students over the summer and/or after school.  Be sure to pay close attention to the deadlines!

UPCOMING DEADLINES

ULTIMATE MED INTERNSHIP (Summer of 2016):

There will be two UMI sessions next year: Session 1 will be June 9-26, 2016 for 150 students and Session 2 will be June 30-July 17, 2016 for 100 students.  Both will sessions will be in Ahmedabad, India.

There are two tuition options:

- Pay by check/money order: $6,100.  $1,000 will be due upon enrollment with three payments each of $1,700 due on 9/1/15, 11/1/15, and 2/1/16. Checks are to be made out to Youth Futures International, the organization that partners with the National Academies in this endeavor.

- Pay by credit/debit card: $6,400.  $1,000 will be due upon enrollment with three payments each of $1,800 due on 9/1/15, 11/1/15, and 2/1/16.

Tuition includes airfare to and from Ahmedabad, India, hotel accommodations and meals, medical college/hospital program fees, and some sightseeing.  It does NOT include the cost of obtaining a visa to enter India, spending money, required vaccinations/prescriptions, or domestic travel to/from the point of departure on the east coast which will be determined later.

The UMI is open to high school students.  It is for students only as parents and other family members are not allowed to be in attendance.

Once enrolled, Jeremy Yelich, the Executive Program Director-UMI forYouth Futures International, will be handling all details and correspondence regarding UMI enrollment with parents and students.

BLACK GIRLS ROCK SUMMER PROGRAM

This year the two-week intensive leadership program will be held at a beautiful fully equipped camp facility located in Rhinebeck, NY from July 20, 2013 to August 3, 2013. This overnight camp is designed for exemplary teenage girls of color who will come to BLACK GIRLS ROCK! from across the world. Through a highly selective application process, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! will accept female applicants who exhibit strong leadership qualities, high moral character, and excellent academic standing.  This year, Black Girls Rock is proud to announce that we will provide scholarships for 50 participants! 

ONGOING OR UNDETERMINED DEADLINE
MS & HS (5th-12th grades) – Academy of Business Leadership is a five-to-seven week program that targets mostly high-potential low-opportunity students 10 to 19 years of age from over 146 inner city middle and high schools each year. SBI participants are hosted on the campuses of the University of Southern California (USC); California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA); California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH); California State University, Fullerton (CSUF); University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); and Loyola Marymount University (LMU). At the end of the program, students receive up to 10 units of high school credit through various school districts. Participants are provided with over 225 hours of instruction by MBA professionals and qualified instructors, and are lectured daily by prominent corporate and civic leaders. In addition, they participate in college preparation workshops, receive 30-40 hours of mentoring from volunteer trainers, read the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal daily, and participate in weekly field trips to over 21 Fortune 500 corporations where they meet with senior executives in boardrooms and learn about their fields of expertise. At the end of the program, students present and pitch their business plans in PowerPoint format to a panel of distinguished business leaders and are awarded over $20,000 in prize money for the highest returns on investment in the Stock Market Competition, the best Written Business Plans, and best Oral Business Plan presentations. Furthermore, students engage in lessons in personal finance, leadership development, core values, career development, and pre-college planning.  Full and partial scholarships are available. Application available March 2012.

HS - Education Unlimited-Public Speaking Institute (at UCLA) - Held at Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Tufts, our Public Speaking Institute focuses on building delivery and debate skills for entering 4th-12th graders. A one week session of the American Legal Experience offers a focus on the American judicial system. Partial tuition scholarships are available and students also may lower costs by choosing the commuter option.

HS - Otis College of Art and Design Summer of Art Program - This intensive, four-week, pre-college program is for individuals 15 and older who wish to study at one of the top art and design colleges in the country. Serious young artists seeking to strengthen and enhance their art skills as well as students with limited art training are invited to participate. Summer of Art is not suited for students in search of a recreational program. Registration begins February 27th, 2012, and scholarships are available.
