HSA IS PLEASED TO WELCOME A NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL TO OUR STAFF

Prior to studying drama and political science at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, Ms. McCullough taught Sunday school and tutored local children. Through these experiences, she developed a passion for teaching that inspired her to join Teach For America (TFA) upon graduation.

During her orientation period with TFA, she was provided a documentary that included a feature on Samuel Gompers Middle School in South Los Angeles. Having relocated to Los Angeles, she found she was living on the same street as Gompers and was eager to work in the community. At Gompers, she began teaching English and history and was eventually given the opportunity to create a drama class as well. After her two-year commitment to TFA, she chose to remain at the school. "I fell in love with the students and the community," says Ms. McCullough.

After teaching for nearly five years, and acting as department co-chair, she decided to move into an administrative role, while also serving as the School Site Council chairperson. Of her decision she shares, "I found teaching very rewarding, but I wanted to find ways to make an even broader impact on the students and the community at large."

She went on to serve as the Dean of Students at Gompers for four years, and then decided to expand her experience by moving to a high school setting. She joined Health Services Academy (HSA) in August.

“I am so pleased to have Ms. McCullough join our leadership team,” stated HSA Principal Dr. Erik Elward. “Her depth of knowledge and experience, and her commitment not only to education but to social issues affecting our community make her a perfect fit for HSA.”

At HSA she has the opportunity to continue expanding the strong ties she has developed with South Los Angeles. In fact, because Gompers is one of HSA's feeder schools, she has been reunited with many of her former students who are now attending HSA. She is also excited about the chance to apply her experience and passion for social justice to our health service focus. "By empowering our students and inspiring them to pursue health careers and to ultimately give back to their own community, HSA is addressing such important issues for Los Angeles," shared Ms. McCullough. "I'm excited to help further the school's mission."

We are grateful to have her as part of the team!

Ms. McCullough received her bachelor's in drama and political science from Spelman College and her master's in elementary education from Loyola Marymount University (LMU). She is currently completing her doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at LMU.
