FRESHMEN END-OF-YEAR PROJECT TACKLES IMPORTANT HEALTH ISSUES

As a culminating project, the students worked in groups to complete an intensive research project and presentation that focused on one of the following areas: asthma, autism, breast cancer, depression, diabetes, eating disorders, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, lung cancer and prostate cancer.

The students concentrated on learning about different facets of their assigned health issue such as community impact, statistics, laws and policies, public awareness campaigns, prevention, intervention, resources and medical research.

In addition to a comprehensive research paper, students were also tasked with completing a creative project that could be used for education and/or advocacy.  Some students did PowerPoint presentations, while others designed informational brochures (see sample) or shot their own PSA or commercial.

We are so proud of all of the hard work and creativity that the freshmen put into their projects.  Thank you to Ms. Kim and Ms. V-T for their planning and leadership, and to the following industry leaders for coming to speak with the students about their work:
  • Phillip Hain, Executive Director, Los Angeles Chapter of Autism Speaks
  • Neal Richman, PhD, Director of Programs & Advocacy, BREATHE California of Los Angeles County
  • Elissa R. Bradley, MPH, Program Manager, Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
