AHSA’s Associated Student Body, under the direction of Mr. Elias Johansson-Miller, opened The Spot, which is a place for students to get help with their homework and to simply hangout with their peers.
In response to a proposal put together by last year’s seniors in Ms. Debbie Kim’s Medical Science 12 class. The class of 2013 petitioned for an after-school resource center for HSA students by presenting the community need through research and interviews. The result of their petition was Mr. Johansson-Miller coordinating the planning and execution of The Spot.
Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, students can access computers, printers, and tutoring support from 3:30pm – 5:00pm. In an adjacent room, students can hang out and socialize with their friends while participating in various activities offered such as art and movie viewings. This collaborative effort between HSA’s students and teachers has created a safe space for HSA’s student body while providing them access to tools that will help them succeed academically.
Some of the activities being offered at The Spot:
- Chat and Chews with the Principal
- Peer Health Educators
- Pick-Up Soccer
- Flag Football
- Many ideas that students come up with every day...
