11 FRESHMAN ATTEND SUMMER STUDENT TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP CAMP

The camp was part of the CollegeYES Program, which uses technology to help high-need students learn more effectively, acquire critical 21st century skills, and better prepare for college.

Students from 12 Alliance schools, including HSA, participated in the camp, which was held August 1st - 4th.  During the three days, students learned to set up and operate an iPad and laptop; plan, implement and assess effective technology-based projects; and locate and use CollegeYES online resources.  They also began training to become effective peer mentors within their schools.

"The camp was an enjoyable experience for our students," shared HSA Work-Based Learning Coordinator Erin Stryffeler, who will act as a program advisor.  "It was amazing to see them grow as leaders over the three days and I look forward to seeing them apply their skills over the course of the year."

The students who attended are excited to begin sharing the program with their classmates.  "I learned so much from the camp," said incoming 9th grader Jaylice.  "We were able to show our research and ideas in new ways that I know our classmates will really enjoy."  Fellow freshman, Carlos, agreed, "Getting to do what I am good at is awesome!  It feels good to be seen as a leader and to teach others what I can do."

Our thanks to the workshop leaders from Generation Yes and to the Alliance staff who helped to organize this fun and informative event for the students.  We would also like to thank the staff of Heritage College-Ready Academy High School for hosting the event at their campus.
