STUDENTS SHOW SIGNIFICANT ACADEMIC GAINS ON CALIFORNIA STANDARDS TESTS

The API (Academic Performance Index), which is part of California's accountability system, measures student and school performance and growth based on statewide assessments.

HSA's first class of students came to the school with an incoming aggregate student API score (from grade 8) of 511, the lowest of any Alliance high school.  After just one year of hard work at HSA, their score grew by 156 points!  The average state API increase for high schools was just nine points during the 2008-09 school year.

"I am extremely proud of our students.  They faced a lot of challenges in their first year as charter high school students, but they worked hard and never gave up." says HSA Principal Erik Elward.  "The API score is also a reflection of tremendous dedication of our teachers and staff.  I know it has inspired all of us to redouble our efforts to ensure the continued growth and success of our students."

2010 scores for the district schools located closest to HSA are as follows:  Washington Preparatory High School - 546, Locke High School - 552,  and Gardena High School - 586.

HSA also had an Average Daily Attendance (ADA) rate of 99% in the 09-10 school year, further proof of the dedication of our students, faculty and staff.
